COURSE AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course will impart an understanding of the psychology of criminal conduct and will explore a range of perspectives from psychological literature regarding criminal behaviour.

The Diploma in Forensic Psychology will provide students with a solid foundation for further professional development if they wish to become Forensic Psychologists.

ON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE COURSE, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Explain the major theories of personality that have been applied to forensic settings including
  • Describe the traumatic psychological impact of violence, child abuse and victimisation
  • Define theories of aggressive behaviour and criminal psychopathy
  • Explain the psychological factors which impact upon eye-witness testimony
  • Understand how criminal psychology can be useful to criminal investigation
  • Understand male and female sex offenders
  • Understand developmental risk factors related to criminal behaviour
  • Describe the process of profiling and apply this to specific areas including sexual offenders, homicide and terrorism
  • Understand the relationship of mental disorder to crime and violence
  • Explain the approach to treatment, rehabilitation and correction
  • Understand the factors that influence the effectiveness of treatment for offenders
